What should I do for my project?

Hey people, I am at Glasgow University in Scotland, after recieving my exam results I am able to get into third year for my honours course in Electronic and Software Engineering, this is a joint honours course in electronic and electrical engineering and computer science / software engineering.

Anyway, my question is:

In third year, we are able to pick a team project to do. We have a team of 5 (where there will only be one, maybe two teams due to the low amount of entrants) where we have from the end of september to the end of april to design, build and test our own hardware %26amp; software.

We are given pretty much free reign, one year a group made a manufacturing device out of lego, another year a group designed this small device which, when moved will display a 3d model of itself on the pc. Just been thinking ahead really and some of my current ideas are a little... daring.

The best (most complex) idea is to design and build a small computer, for clarification, this means that we design and build our own CPU, 'motherboard', power supply systems and have a small operating system running on it. I reckon its doable, we have access to alot of resources (components, large labs and alot of lecturers which are more than happy to give a quick tip)

However this idea is very complex, mostly the design of the cpu is my concern.

If the project is good enough, it would help secure scholarships and grants for the following year so it is important to do something hard, and right.

Can anyone think of ideas which isnt a computer? Had several ideas for robots - mapping, travelling etc

Sorry for such the long question, but thanks for reading.

Paul.|||I cannot think of any one specific project, but I can think of some interesting areas you might want to brainstorm over.

Alternative Energies. You have solar, wind and just recently Nokia came out with a mobile phone that recharges itself from radio waves floating through the air. Lots of devices and software ideas possible here.

Security and/or Home Automation. Everything from surveillance cameras to DVRs to remote viewing. A huge industry with lots of room for a niche market idea.

GPS and mapping.

Bluetooth Devices.

Personal Security.

Medical PDAs and other Doctor Gadgets.

A New Search Engine!

Good luck to your project!|||You know you get them local beauty parlour places for us girls ?

where we get pedicures, manicures, brow waxing, etc etc etc ??

check one of em out - find out if they have a smart booking/appointment system (not a transactional system) , and chances are they keep a diary or its all paperised.

you get the chance to walk into a beauty parlour, possible chat up the girls and stay in touch over time lol

and when you deliver sometjhing which integrates their transactional and booking system as one system - the manager may even offer you a job there lol

you could give us lovely ladies manicures and pedicures !

lol you look like that sexy England cricket player, Sidebottom...dunno his first name, could be Ryan - but hes got a smilar hair style to that of your avatar lol
