Do you think that the election of Obama has brought out racist incidents? What can we do to stop racist hate?

Recently got this electronic mail from a friend who was very upset with the way things were going after the election of President-elect Obama. Below is and edited version of the note as he sent it out to at least give you the feel he has about this subject.

Stand Strong Against Hate

Hate groups in the U.S. Barack Obama's election has generated a backlash in the form of increased hate group membership and hundreds of racial incidents across the country, including cross burnings and violent attacks. And prior to the election, two skinheads were arrested in a plot to kill Obama and other African Americans.

The Southern Poverty Law Center tracks and exposes hate groups and hate crimes, serves as a resource to law enforcement agencies, and sues hate groups for the violent actions of its members. We're currently tracking more than 800 hate groups that seek to divide our country. We ask that you join our efforts, and those of thousands of others, by adding your name to our Stand Strong Against Hate map. If you've already put yourself on the map, please forward this email to all of your friends and family. Together, we can send a message that racial hatred has no place in our society.

This is one example of what can be done to track and stop hate speech.

What others examples are there that you know of to track and examine racist incidents and hate speech now that the election is over and people have taken up their daily lives once more?|||I believe it. I was actually expecting it. For weeks before the election I was feeling a very negative atmosphere. A year ago someone came to our house and painted racial epithets on our car, and swastika's on a neighbor's garage door. I don't think enough is being done to combat this type of behavior. We never even got a follow up call from the police. I don't know what we can do to change things if law enforcement isn't doing anything. Sigh..........|||Yes, the election of Obama has most definitely brought out racial/hate incidents. What can we do to stop racist hate? What you're doing is a good start. Education is key to stopping racism. W|||Look at the in roads into the south things are getting better, it just takes time, I'm sorry to say.|||I honestly think people are just lying in wait for any reason to express hatred some times. This is a BIG event for haters... Sad.|||our country is falling to **** and you are worried about race..?|||The racism was always there. It has been there since the days of slavery. It is just that those whom it did not personally effect did not pay attention to it before. Hate crimes have been recognized in our court system for some time and unfortunately as long as people have free will it is not going away. Parents who are racist tend to teach their children to be the same way.|||I think it's more precise to say that Obama's election has brought more racism out into the open again. Violence is a horrible occurrence whether or not it's racially motivated, but these instances aside, I think it's a good thing that these things are coming out. You can't fix a problem by pretending it's not there, like the U.S. has done with racism for the past 15-20.

I've long said that the only way to deal with an intolerant person is to start with tolerance yourself. If you meet intolerance with intolerance, things will only escalate. Get inside someone's head. Find out where their irrational hatred comes from, and try to point out the errors in their logic, and if they disagree, they disagree. Unless someone's getting hurt, you have to let people believe what they want to believe. Otherwise, you're just as bad as the intolerant person you're trying to change.|||well, this was to be expected. IGNORANCE did not die because Obama was elected. One has to be more careful of certain things (for instance, I supported Obama, but would put out Obama campaign signs.) And, I live in the area in California where they were vandalizing the homes!!

I do predict this ~ if Obama was (god forbid) attempted as assasinating, then THERE WILL BE RIOTS!! But, I pray that never comes to be.

Racial prejudice is not to be explained~because how can you explain someone's IGNORANCE to judge another on their race and not the individual person on the inside??!!
