My husband and I would like to get a GPS system in order to find our way around unfamiliar places and search for restaurants and businesses. For beginners who really just need an electronic yellow pages and simple maps on-screen, what should we look for and how much should it cost? It doesn't necessarily have to be dirt cheap, but we'd also like it not to cost $700 dollars.|||Probably the best GPS system for you would be one that meet your needs.
You must first understand what you would like as features such as text to speech, where the unit will pronounce the street names when offering audio directions.
You may wish to have a larger display such as 4.3" over a 3.5" smaller display. You may also wish to have the unit to include traffic information, you would want to purchase a unit that have tons of points of interest and preferably to have full North America coverage
The best unit currently would be
#1] Garmin 760 for best overall value and features
#2] Magellan Maestro 4250 with Voice command feature
#3] TomTom 930 with Map share and voice command features along with NA and EU maps
All these units price range from $349 to $449 which is an excellent buy! They all have larger 4.3" display, TTS, tons of POI and Traffic option which is pretty much what most people are looking for in a great GPS unit!
Costco is a great place to buy GPS unit if you don't care about selection and availability, most of the time Costco will have one model for a few weeks than it will no longer be available, and there is no one there to answer any questions you may have with the GPS products they represent.
Consider buying from a local merchant that have both the knowledge and inventory to support you after the sale.
If you are not sure which is the best unit for you, you can rent these units for testing purposes from GPS4Rent http://www.gps4rent.com/ or you can buy one from Auto Nav 2000 Plus, Inc. http://www.autonav2000.com/
Good Luck|||You should easilly be able to find something in your price range.
The most popular models seem to be made by Garmin and Tom Tom these days, but there are others.
Decide whether or not you need "premium features" or not. Bluetooth capabilities means that it might be usable with your cell-phone so that you can answer calls wirelessly with it. Some can also be used to play music when you insert a card into it. Some have a subscription feature that updates the unit with traffic information.
Basic models with the features you are looking for will start at around $200 or just below and go up from there.
I would recommend a model that has internal batteries so that it will run when the car is off. Best to go to a large electronics store that stocks several units so that you can seem them all side by side; a lot comes down to how you like the presentation of the maps.|||They say you get as much quality as you're willing to shell out . :) and it can turn out good or bad :) depending on price of item or brand name. :)
I suggest you go to costco.com or a costco warehouse if you have one near you, best buys or frys would work too..and then maybe go to consumerreports.com i believe it is and compare the products by customer review ratings and see which model or style or type you like best :)
I enclosed a navigation /GPS product page for you too. Good Luck :)
|||I love my garmin, i have a wide screen version. They are reasonably cheap, mine was about 225.00. Its great, i would like to upgrade one day. They have ones that have blue tooth built into them so for example: when you look up a restaurant and want to call to make reservations you can click the screen and dial from the garmin. Its hooked up through your current cell phone..(just like your blue tooth head set)
Good luck! |||GPS receivers come in a variety of formats, from devices integrated into cars, phones, and watches, to dedicated devices such as those shown here from manufacturers Trimble, Garmin and Leica !
